Kitty Hawk - With warmer weather and the
summer visitor season just around the corner, the North Carolina Department of
Transportation is alerting motorists that work on the eastbound lanes of the
Wright Memorial Bridge at the Currituck/Dare county line will be wrapping up on
schedule in about a month.
The eastbound lanes were closed in October for repair and
refurbishment work. All traffic was diverted to the westbound lanes while work
progressed. The project is scheduled to end Monday, May 14.
“Despite rough weather in January and March, the contractor is now
in the process of completing the work,” said NCDOT Division Engineer Jerry
Jennings. “We fully expect to reopen the eastbound lanes by May 14, if not
before.”
The work is part of an overall $21 million project to refurbish the
Wright Memorial Bridge. The project is funded by an initiative designed to
improve the conditions and increase the lifespans of high value bridges across
the state.
