Rocky Mount - Construction will start this summer on
widening almost 1.3 miles of Springfield Road in eastern Rocky Mount.
Barnhill Contracting Co. of Rocky Mount received a $5.5 million contract in
March from the N.C. Department of Transportation to add a middle turn lane to
the two-lane road between U.S. 64 Alternate and just past Leggett Road. With a
center turn lane, motorists can more easily turn left without backing up
traffic.
The contractor can begin work after Aug. 1, and the project is scheduled to
be completed by May 2020. During construction, motorists may encounter temporary
lane closures and flagging operations.
This was one of 16 road and bridge contracts recently awarded by NCDOT. Per
state law, they went to the lowest qualified bidder for each project. The
contracts are worth $429.7 million, nearly $39 million under engineer
estimates.
