Safety Improvement Project Requires Lane Closures on U.S. 17 in Onslow County

One lane will remain open in each direction

JACKSONILLE – Drivers traveling on U.S. 17 near the intersection of Drummer Kellum Road and Wolf Swamp Road north of Jacksonville should expect to encounter lane closures beginning Wednesday, Feb. 21.

The closures are needed so a contractor for the Department of Transportation can upgrade drainage and repave the road.

“We are also making safety improvements to the intersection by limiting the number of left turns,” said Jacksonville Resident Engineer Trevor Carroll. “We expect this to translate into reduced crashes at this location.”

The closures will be in place from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on weekdays, and could be in place on weekends from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., with the work expected to last into June.

Transportation officials urge motorists to drive carefully through the work zone, and to allow extra time for driving through the area.
