Railroad Bridge Repairs to Close Section of Alston Avenue, Possibly Until Sunday Morning

Durham - Repairs to a Norfolk Southern Railroad bridge will require the closure of a section of Alston Avenue (N.C. 55) starting Thursday, April 5, at 9 a.m. The bridge just north of the intersection with Pettigrew Street (north of the Alston Avenue exit for the Durham Freeway) was damaged when it was struck by an over-height piece of construction equipment being hauled on a tractor-trailer.

The closure could remain in place until 8 a.m. on Sunday, April 8, but may end earlier, depending on the extent of repairs needed.

During the closure, a detour route will have drivers on southbound Alston Avenue turning right on Main Street and then left on Fayetteville Street to access the Durham Freeway at exit 12. They will then go east on the freeway to Alston Avenue at the next exit and continue south. Northbound drivers will follow that route in reverse.

Drivers are reminded to use extra caution when approaching the closed section of road, and to anticipate needing extra time to travel through the area because of the detour.
