STEDMAN – One newly built Cumberland
County bridge is scheduled to open next week, while two nearby spans will close
so they can be replaced.
Contractor Smith-Rowe LLC of Mount Airy is replacing the Maxwell
Road bridge over the South River at the Cumberland-Sampson County line. If the
weather cooperates, the contractor will reopen Maxwell Road on Monday, Feb. 26.
The contractor plans to close two back-to-back bridges on nearby Faircloth
Bridge Road, east of Fayetteville, sometime on Monday evening, Feb. 26.
The detour used for Maxwell Road will be similar for the Faircloth
Bridge Road closure, taking motorists onto Wade Stedman, Maxwell, Halltown and
South River roads.
Although safe for traffic, the three bridges are functionally
obsolete and structurally deficient because of their aging components and high
maintenance costs. The two bridges on Faircloth Bridge Road were built in 1965
and have vehicle weight restrictions, which the new bridges will not carry.
The contract awarded by the N.C. Department of Transportation to
replace all three bridges totaled $2.7 million. The project is scheduled to be
completed by November.
Work on the new Maxwell Road bridge, seen here in January 2018, progresses.
