Inspections of the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge Require Lane Closures

WILMINGTON – Drivers traveling on the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge (U.S. 17/76/421) over the Cape Fear River will likely encounter intermittent lane closures starting Monday, March 12.

The closures will be in place between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday through Thursday, through March 22.

N.C. Department of Transportation crews will be inspecting the bridge lift span. The Federal Highway Administration requires all bridges to be inspected once every two years. Regular inspections help the department identify whether a bridge needs maintenance and repair. If inspectors find a safety concern, the bridge will be repaired or closed immediately until the repairs can be made.  If necessary, weight restrictions will be placed on a bridge. The department will not keep a bridge open if it is determined to be unsafe.

Motorists are also advised to use caution while traveling through the work zone and expect possible delays.  Although there will not be any detours, drivers are urged to seek alternate routes.
