ASHEBORO – Motorists will soon see
improvements to sections of Fayetteville Street (U.S. 220 Business) in Asheboro,
after the N.C. Department of Transportation recently awarded a $1.7 million
contract.
Workers for Sharpe Brothers, a division of Vecellio & Grogan
Inc. of Greensboro, will reduce the four lanes on South Fayetteville Street
between Salisbury Street and the East Dixie Street ramp into one lane in each
direction with a center turn lane. They also will add left-turn lanes and revise
traffic signals on Presnell Street at North Fayetteville Street.
The city of Asheboro requested the road enhancements. The project
will increase safety by giving motorists more room to turn left. In addition,
the project will include a concrete median at the intersection of South
Fayetteville Street and Taft Avenue to reduce the risk of the more-serious
angled crashes.
Work will begin in March and is expected to be completed by Aug.
31.
During construction, motorists can expect to encounter intermittent
lane closures on South Fayetteville Street, and a block of Presnell Street near
North Fayetteville will be temporarily closed.
