Charlotte - The N.C. Department of Transportation has awarded a $7.2 million contract to improve traffic flow at the intersection of N.C. 16 and Mount Holly-Huntersville Road in Charlotte, featuring a design first for North Carolina – the continuous flow intersection, or CFI.
Current traffic volumes on N.C. 16 average 46,000 vehicles per day, and between 12,000 and 16,000 vehicles per day on Mount Holly-Huntersville Road approaching the intersection from the north or south, respectively.
The CFI will improve current and future travel demands by shifting traffic to two stages, so vehicles will cross N.C. 16 several hundred feet before making a left turn at the intersection. This implementation will increase the intersection’s efficiency by up to 70 percent.

Contractor Blythe Development Co. of Charlotte can start work as early as April 30, with a targeted completion of December 2018.
This was one of 16 road and bridge contracts recently awarded by the N.C. Department of Transportation. Per state law they went to the lowest qualified bidder for each project. The contracts are worth $429.7 million, nearly $39 million under engineer estimates.
