CASSI on display at the 2023 N.C. Transportation Summit in Raleigh.

The N.C. Department of Transportation envisions a transportation system in North Carolina where shared mobility options are affordable, convenient, reliable and safe and everyone has equal access to opportunities and services.

NCDOT is exploring how connected and automated vehicles can help achieve that vision through the Connected Autonomous Shuttle Supporting Innovation program, or CASSI.

CASSI demonstrates the capability of connected and automated vehicles to prepare for the future of mobility and enhance public transportation services.

CASSI shows what automated vehicle technology can do in safe, real-world settings and evaluates how automated vehicles can best be used by riders with different needs and in different environments. Examples include transit applications such as first mile/last mile solutions and connected vehicle infrastructure.

NCDOT has tested and evaluated two models of all-electric, low-speed automated shuttles across five different projects to date. Through partnerships and feedback from surveys and engagement events, NCDOT has developed analyses and findings that help guide how current generation automated shuttle technology can best be used now and further developed to meet the needs of all riders.
