Based on recent inspections by the N.C. Department of Transportation, the three bridges that provide access to Wrightsville Beach have about 10 years of life remaining before replacement is necessary. Due to the complexity of this proposed project, NCDOT has begun the process to replace the bridges.
The two bridges along West Salisbury Street (U.S. 74), built in 1957, and the bridge along Causeway Drive (U.S. 76), built in 1972, have sustained extensive erosion to their concrete girders due to exposure to salt spray from the ocean and passing motorboats.
This exposure has resulted in the concrete on the girders to deteriorate, exposing the reinforcing steel to the elements. This has made it more difficult to maintain these structures over the years.
