In April 2018, the N.C. Department of Transportation and the Sierra Club signed a settlement agreement allowing NCDOT to proceed with the U.S. 70 Havelock Bypass while addressing project-related conservation concerns associated with the Croatan National Forest and providing resources for long-term protection of the forest.
The agreement, stemming from a 2016 federal lawsuit against NCDOT, the Federal Highway Administration and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, means the project can proceed once all permits are obtained.
