Project Unfunded
The proposed improvements to U.S. 64 is not funded in the 2020-2029 State Transportation Improvement Plan. The project could be restarted in the future if funding becomes available.
Preferred Alternative
The N.C. Department of Transportation identified a recommended design option – referred as a Preferred Alternative – that would involve widening U.S. 64 in Tyrell County to four lanes with a 46-foot median.
In Dare County, work would involve widening the road to four lanes with a 23-foot median and building a bridge across the Alligator River that would avoid the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge and connect U.S. 64 to the Southern Bypass.
