N.C. 55 Widening in Harnett & Wake Counties

  Project Overview

Public Input

People are encouraged to participate in the planning process by submitting comments or questions by visiting the department’s public engagement portal for this project.

Construction is underway to widen a portion of N.C. 55 into a four-lane, divided roadway (with two lanes going in each direction) in northern Harnett County and southern Wake County. The corridor currently has one travel lane in each direction.

The project would include a bypass on a new location on the western side of Angier. The bypass would avoid impacting businesses on Raleigh Street going through the center of town.

The project has several benefits, including enhancing highway safety, easing congestion and improving traffic flow.

The N.C. Department of Transportation has divided the project into three segments, with segments A and B to be completed first under one contract currently scheduled to be awarded in the fall of 2022. A breakdown of the segments follows:

  • Segment A: Just south of Oak Grove Church Road in Harnett County to N.C. 210
  • Segment B: N.C. 210 to Jicarilla Lane in Wake County
  • Segment C: Jicarilla Lane to N.C. 42 in Fuquay-Varina

Note: Segments A and B include the bypass that would be built on a new route.

Project Funding

NCDOT has estimated below the cost for the overall project to total $121.6 million, which covers all three segments and the new bypass. Segments A and B are funded in the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP), while NCDOT anticipates funding segment C in a future STIP cycle.
