The N.C. Department of Transportation is piloting a cutting-edge project to improve mobility and safety on the roads surrounding N.C. State University in Raleigh.

The Multimodal Connected Vehicle Pilot, funded by a $2 million grant from the Advanced Transportation Technologies and Innovative Mobility Development program, uses connected vehicle technology, or CV technology, to enhance the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, and transit riders.

Located along key corridors such as Hillsborough Street, Western Boulevard, Avent Ferry Road, and Gorman Street, the pilot aims to assess the safety impacts of CV technology.

How CV Technology Works

CV technology communicates messages between vehicles, including transit, and pedestrians by way of infrastructure and mobile devices. The app is wirelessly connected to 27 signalized intersections near the N.C. State campus in Raleigh. The app collects real-time data from the technology at these intersections to provide road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers, with alerts to improve traffic operations and safety near the N.C. State campus.
