The proposed work would widen 3.2 miles of Miller and Fontana (N.C. 101) boulevards from two to four lanes and construct concrete curbs and gutters. The proposed design also includes:
- 11-foot-wide lanes
- 17.5-foot raised median
- 10-foot multi-use path on south side of the road
- 5-foot sidewalk on the north side of the road
Additionally , the N.C. Department of Transportation would build a roundabout at the intersection of Miller Boulevard and Lake Road.
In 2019, NCDOT announced the preferred design, known as Alternative 3, which would widen the corridor mostly to the north. This was one of three design alternatives considered. In the fall of 2022, NCDOT made minor revisions to the preferred design, now known as Alternative 3A. To see all of the designs, visit Project Maps.
Alternative 3 was chosen based on public comment and the findings of an environmental assessment that determined this option would have the least impact on natural and cultural resources, landowners and utilities.
