DMV Digits: Training

License & Theft training

The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles trains and develops more than 1,400 employees across North Carolina, in addition to specialized training for law enforcement, school bus and traffic safety, administrative hearings and license plate agencies.

In 2018, NCDMV conducted 23,560.75 hours of training for both new hires and established personnel. This includes five 216-hour driver license examiner schools, three 136-hour license plate agency schools and training sessions and one law enforcement academy.

  • License and theft (law enforcement) training: 6,930.75 hours
  • Driver license training: 13,734 hours
  • Titles and vehicle registration training: 2,500 hours
  • Commercial driver license training: 396 hours

Last year, NCDMV’s School Bus and Traffic Safety unit provided 60,940 hours of training for school bus drivers, driver education instructors and drivers through driver improvement clinics and defensive driving courses.
