Work Begins on New I-74 Signs and Mile Markers in Forsyth County

WINSTON SALEM – Crews have begun preparing for the redesignation of N.C. 74 and U.S. 52 to Interstate 74 near Rural Hall as part of the Winston-Salem Eastern Beltway improvements.

The redesignation will take effect once the Eastern Beltway projects are completed. Currently, U.S. 52 from Westinghouse Road to the I-74 split in Surry County follows the U.S. 52 exit and mile marker system. Flatiron Construction, in partnership with its subcontractor, has started installing foundations for new signs and mile markers that will mark the transition to I-74, stretching from the Virginia state line to Westinghouse Road.

Crews will work along the shoulders of U.S 52 and I-74 in both directions to prepare the area for new exits and mile markers. The foundation work is expected to take about three weeks, with the installation of new signs following in an additional one to two weeks.

Work will take place Monday through Friday, and lane closures may be necessary in some areas. If closures are required, they will occur between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., depending on the work and shoulder width.

Below is the list of the current exit numbers and the new exit numbers that will replace them:

  • I-74 (Surry County): Old Exit 140 → New Exit 18
