YADKINVILLE – A contractor for the N.C. Department of Transportation will soon mobilize for a construction project to improve safety, congestion and utility lines along State Street (U.S. 601) near U.S. 421.
Crews from Blythe Construction of Charlotte may begin installing traffic signs and temporary traffic signals at several intersections as soon as Monday. The contractor will continue providing signage and traffic control for worker safety and to direct drivers for the duration of construction.
This $19.8 million contract will build four roundabouts and a new median, improve intersections and upgrade storm water and utilities between Sharon Drive and Lee Avenue. The new median will separate north and south traffic. The four roundabouts will be built to ease congestion at the U.S. 421 ramps and the intersections of Maple Street and Lee Avenue.
At least one lane of traffic will remain open in each direction for the duration of construction, and much of the stormwater and utility construction will occur from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. in order to minimize congestion in the area.
Access will remain open to all businesses during construction, and the contract calls for completion by Oct. 1, 2027.
