GARNER- Starting Sunday, contractors for the N.C. Department of Transportation plan to begin a series of overnight closures along a section of Interstate 40 for bridgework.
Each night Sunday through Thursday, crews will close two lanes of I-40 East near U.S. 70 (Exit 309) at 9 p.m. followed by a full closure about 10 p.m. that is set to last until 5 the following mornings.
During the full closures, I-40 East traffic will be detoured to take U.S. 70 East (Exit 309) to N.C. 42 West (Exit 320) to return to I-40 East. Drivers who want to head west on the Triangle Expressway/ Toll N.C. 540 (Exit 310 off of I-40 East) will start on this same detour route but will use the N.C. 42 interchange (Exit 320) to turn around and head back on U.S. 70 West to access the Triangle Expressway.
The work and associated closures are weather dependent and subject to change.
Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, follow posted signs, and use caution when traveling through the area.
