New Extension of Triangle Expressway Performs Strong in First 60 Days

​Customers driving on the recently opened Complete 540 Phase 1 extension of the Triangle Expressway (Toll N.C. 540). 

RALEIGH- ​In the first 60 days since the North Carolina Turnpike Authority (NCTA) opened the Complete 540 Phase 1 extension of the Triangle Expressway (Toll N.C. 540) on September 25, 2024, North Carolina drivers have benefitted from significant time savings as the Triangle Expressway experiences a surge in usage.

“We are delighted to see our community experience the benefits of the new extension of the Triangle Expressway,” says J.J. Eden, Executive Director of NCTA. “As we celebrate this milestone, we eagerly anticipate the construction of Phase 2, moving us closer to completing the outer loop around the greater Raleigh area.”  

Triangle Expressway (Toll N.C. 540) Extension   

  • Opened September 25, 2024, at 6:00 a.m.  
  • Six-lane 18-mile facility extending the Triangle Expressway from the N.C. 55 Bypass in Apex to the I-40/I-42 interchange in Garner.​​​

 

  • Over 5 million transactions on the new extension of the Triangle Expressway to date (each time a vehicle passes under a toll gantry).
  • Nearly 147,000 transactions on the heaviest travel day so far on the new extension of the Triangle Expressway. ​
  • Vehicles with three or more axels, like box trucks or semi-trucks, are six percent of all transactions on the new extension of the Triangle Expressway.   
  • The average NC Quick Pass customer trip on the new extension of the Triangle Expressway is $1.96.
