Credential Distribution Plan for WNC Areas Without Mail Service

ROCKY MOUNT - The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles has designated local driver license offices in Western North Carolina as credential pick-up centers for residents impacted by Hurricane Helene.

With mail services temporarily unavailable, these centers provide a solution for obtaining driver licenses and ID cards as recovery efforts continue.

Credentials Ordered Before Oct. 7

If you ordered a new credential, online or in person, and you have not received your credential by mail after 21 days, it could have been returned to the NCDMV Headquarters.

Please visit ncdot.gov/WNCcredentialPickup, find your zip code and see where your credential can be picked up.

If your credential was not received via mail, is not at the designated location, is not at the post office that delivers mail to your address, and cannot be located elsewhere in the NCDMV system, a duplicate credential will need to be ordered .

Credentials Ordered After Oct. 7

If your address is in a zip code listed in the table at the webpage linked above, and you order(ed) a credential in person at a driver license office, you must return to that office after 21 days to pick up your credential if it is not or cannot be delivered by mail.

If you ordered a credential online and your address is in a zip code listed in the table at the webpage linked above, you must pick up your credential from the corresponding driver license office if it is not or cannot be delivered by mail.

NCDMV asks that you allow  at least 21 days to coordinate the delivery of your credential.

Emergency operations and card distribution will continue through the end of the year.

As of today, all but four driver license offices – Asheville, Burnsville, Marion and Spruce Pine – that were closed as a result of Hurricane Helene have reopened. Marion is scheduled to reopen on Oct. 16.

As these driver license offices reopen, there will be adjustments to the table. For example, Asheville zip codes will be available for pickup at an Asheville driver license office when an office in Asheville can reopen.
