Work Continues on N.C. 105 Project Next Week

BANNER ELK - A contractor for the N.C. Department of Transportation has updated next week’s schedule for work on the N.C. 105 bridge project in Watauga County.

Crews from Wright Brother’s Construction have previously performed blasting and rock removal operations, continuing work to replace the 69-year-old bridge over the Watauga River.

The latest schedule is as follows:

  • Aug. 6 and Aug. 8:
    • From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., blasting operations will be performed on the north side of the bridge near the intersection of N.C. 105 and Broadstone Road.
    • Intermittent traffic stoppages will take place for no more than 30 minutes at a time. 
  • Aug. 8: 
    • From 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning, rock removal operations will take place along the project work zone. 
    • Motorists can expect traffic stoppages of no more than 15 minutes at a time as crews scale the rock face and remove material from behind barriers. 
    • No blasting operations are associated with these nighttime closures. 
  • Aug. 6 through Aug. 10:
    • From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., drivers can expect brief traffic stoppages as crews move equipment and haul rocks from the project. 
    • Contractors from Charter-Spectrum and Skyline Telecoms will be on-site to relocate a new pole at the N.C. 105 and Broadstone Road intersection. Brief lane closures and traffic stoppages may be associated with this work. 
Motorists are reminded to use caution when approaching the work zone and utilize DriveNC.gov​ for real-time traffic information.
