CHARLOTTE – The completion of the Interstate 485 express lanes project is moving into 2025.
Construction of the 17-mile project started in the summer of 2019 and is anticipated to achieve substantial completion in the spring/summer of next year, meaning work on the main line of I-485 will be done at that time.
Over the course of construction, the Department has revised and added work to the project, while post-pandemic issues like contract workforce shortages and delays receiving necessary materials have pushed the completion date back.
“Critical progress milestones have passed, causing delays. The public has been patient for five years, and the Department wants this project finished," says Division 10 Engineer Brett Canipe. “Our staff have been working with the contractor to develop an updated schedule we are confident will be met."
While delays are not unusual for construction projects, the Department recognizes the need to deliver this critical infrastructure to the Charlotte region – and offer drivers a choice to spend less time in their vehicles.
Some of the work to be completed includes shifting all general-purpose lane traffic into its final pattern, completing bridgework at Johnston Road, Weddington Road and Ballantyne Commons Parkway, applying the final asphalt surface to the travel lanes, and final installation of tolling equipment.
Once complete, drivers will have the option to use one express lane in each direction between I-77 (exit 67) in Charlotte and U.S. 74 (exit 51) in Matthews for a more reliable travel time. The project features other corridor improvements, including:
- Adding one general purpose lane in each direction of I-485 between Rea Road and Providence Road
- Widening the bridge carrying Ballantyne Commons Parkway over I-485 in Charlotte
- Improving the interchange at John Street in Matthews
- Building an interchange at Weddington Road in Matthews
The State of North Carolina will own and operate the I-485 express lanes. The Department of Transportation is leading the planning and construction of this project and will be responsible for maintenance of the lanes. All account management, toll collection and customer service will be administered by the North Carolina Turnpike Authority.
