SPRING LAKE – The N.C. Department of Transportation began today repairing soil erosion on the side of a major route through Spring Lake.
The state agency closed the northbound right lane on
North Bragg Boulevard (N.C. 24/N.C. 87) near Chapel Hill Road for precautionary reasons last week, because the failing embankment was encroaching onto the highway right of way. The department also closed Chapel Hill Road at North Bragg Boulevard for the same issue.
NCDOT and contract crews will build on the site a concrete drainage box next to the road. The box will shore up the ditch and prevent further erosion.
The NCDOT hopes to reopen the right lane, as well as the Chapel Hill Road intersection, within three weeks, depending on weather. Incidental work will continue at the site for another week.
The left northbound lane will remain open during the repairs, but drivers should slow down and be alert while traveling in this area.
