RALEIGH – A Division 3 employee has won a statewide department award for his service and dedication to the job.
Roger Hawkins, an Incident Management Assistance Patrol (IMAP) driver for Brunswick, New Hanover, and Pender counties, was selected for the Roscoe Award.
The award is named after a former Division 5 IMAP driver, Roscoe Narron. He patrolled sections of interstates 40 and 440 in Wake County for six years. Roscoe worked to clear crashes and aid stranded drivers, fostered positive relationships with media and emergency responders, and received numerous accommodations throughout his career for his reliable work and dedication.
The Roscoe Award is now presented to an IMAP driver who embodies the same characteristics. Hawkins was nominated in 2020 for his work the prior year by his supervisor. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he received the award and was honored at a ceremony in Raleigh last week.
Hawkins’ communication, customer service, dedication, initiative, public awareness, safety and mobility and team building were all detailed in the nomination.
His supervisor noted several examples including, Hawkins responding to a disabled motorist and noticing the driver was not feeling well. Hawkins immediately called EMS and it was later discovered the motorist was suffering from a heart attack and rushed to a local hospital. It was stated the outcome could’ve been worse had it not been for Hawkins quick thinking.
Another example is that Hawkins has been integral part in increasing awareness of the IMAP services, including designing labels for customer response cards and distributing them. He has also educated local agencies, which has resulted in an increase in request from responders and the public.
Hawkins continues to serve as an IMAP patrolman for the N.C. Department of Transportation.
