FAYETTEVILLE – Drivers will encounter delays on Raeford Road near the Walmart for the next few weeks while an intersection is expanded to handle more traffic.
A contractor for the N.C. Department of Transportation is extending the dual left-turn lanes from westbound Raeford Road (U.S. 401) onto Gillis Hill Road in western Fayetteville by about 400 feet. The improvement will allow the queuing of about 50 more vehicles in the left turn lanes without obstructing the through lanes going westbound. Traffic using this intersection has increased after the Fayetteville Outer Loop was extended to Raeford Road last year.
The work requires the lane next to the median on Raeford Road be closed in each direction for the safety of workers and the traveling public. The lanes will be closed Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.
However, there will be no lane closures or work Nov. 25-28.
The project is expected to be complete in December.
Drivers should slow down and be alert for workers when traveling through the work zone.
