CHARLOTTE – N.C. Department of Transportation contract crews tonight will start maintenance work in the collector lane that empties onto Interstate 77 North near the Morehead Street bridge, continuing a $10.4 million contract to improve approximately 1.3 miles of the roadway south of uptown between the Morehead Street and Brookshire Freeway exits.
The contract calls for milling and paving, concrete pavement repairs, and installing pavement markings and snow plowable markers.
To do the work safely, ramp closures will be in place from I-277 Inner and inbound Wilkinson Boulevard to I-77 North each night as weather permits, through May 27. The contract allows the closures from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday nights – Friday mornings, and from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. Friday nights – Sunday mornings. The schedule could be extended if rain delays progress.
Drivers wishing to go north on I-77 can continue on I-277 Inner to I-77 South, exiting at Clanton Road to turn around and head north. Drivers wishing to access I-77 North from Wilkinson Boulevard will continue on I-277 Outer to I-77 North.
The project also includes improvements to the northbound and southbound bridges over Morehead Street, Irwin Creek/Stewart Creek Greenway, and Fourth/Trade Streets.
Contract crews will clean and paint the bridges, replace bridge joints, perform repairs to the concrete deck, and add a new deck overlay to smooth the ride for motorists.
