UPDATED RELEASE: Cumberland County Bridge Reopens After Repairs

SPRING LAKE – East Manchester Road near its North Bragg Boulevard intersection reopened Thursday, Oct. 24 about a week early after repairs were completed for soil erosion underneath the road’s bridge in Cumberland County.

Floodwaters from Hurricane Florence caused some of the bed material surrounding the bridge foundation to erode, or scour, into the Little River. An N.C. Department of Transportation contractor stabilized the erosion with grout and stone.

The bridge was closed beginning on Oct. 14 to allow crews to store their equipment. As this Google map shows, the signed detour was on N.C. 210 and North Bragg Boulevard (N.C. 24/87).

NCDOT engineering inspectors determined the bridge to be structurally safe following last year’s hurricane, but repairs were needed to prevent more erosion and ensure the longevity of the structure.
