RALEIGH – The N.C. Department of Transportation will host a public meeting next week to discuss two options aimed at easing congestion and increasing safety and east-west connectivity throughout a four-mile stretch of Glenwood Avenue (U.S. 70), between Interstate 540 and Hilburn Drive in Northwest Raleigh.
The first option would upgrade Glenwood Avenue from four to six lanes with a Reduced Conflict Intersection (RCI) design, which redirects drivers from side roads to turn right and easily enter the flow of traffic. The driver may pull into a nearby dedicated U-turn lane to go in the other direction. A reduced conflict intersection is safer because it reduces the risk and severity of a crash, and it improves the traffic flow, allowing people to reach their destinations more quickly.
The other option would upgrade Glenwood Avenue to an eight-lane roadway with traditional intersections.
These proposed options may be revised, and a preferred alternative will be selected, based on comments received from the public, state and local agencies, and potential impacts to the human and natural environment.
Maps of the two options are on the NCDOT public meetings website. Area residents will have a chance to view them in detail at a meeting on Monday, July 22, from 4-7 p.m. at the Embassy Suites Raleigh-Durham Airport/Brier Creek, 8001 Arco Corporate Drive.
No formal presentation will be made, but project staff will be available to answer questions and receive comments relative to the concepts throughout the meeting.
