YANCEYVILLE – State transportation officials have awarded a contract for a bridge preservation project where N.C. 62 crosses over the Dan River near the Virginia state line.
The work is intended to extend the life of the 43-year-old bridge by at least 25 years. It carried an average of 3,200 vehicles per day in 2017. That figure is expected to double by 2025.
The work includes cleaning and repainting structural steel and bearings, and repairing and improving the substructure. There are no anticipated road closures, as the project does not call for work to the bridge deck.
Titan Industrial Services entered the lowest of six bids at $966,337. The work could begin as early as April and is expected to be complete by mid-September.
This is one of 21 major highway and bridge projects recently awarded by the N.C. Department of Transportation.
Per state law, the projects went to the lowest bidder among qualified contractors. They are worth $331.5 million, more than $57 million under engineer estimates.
