ASHEVILLE — An improved ride on Interstate 40 is coming for
motorists in Buncombe and Burke Counties. The N.C. Department of Transportation
recently awarded three contracts to improve road conditions on the highway in
western North Carolina.
Pavement and bridge rehabilitation from the Haywood County line to
mile marker 44 in Buncombe County will be conducted by Harrison Construction of
Knoxville for $10.4 million. The work may begin on March 16 and should conclude
by November with nearly all work being done at night.
Six sets of bridges — 12 in total — between the I-40/I-26/I-240
interchange and the Hendersonville Road exit in Asheville will be rehabilitated
by GLF Construction of Miami, Florida for $8.6 million. Work may begin on Feb.
26 and should wrap up by October of 2019, with nearly all work being done
between 6 p.m. and 7 a.m.
All of I-40 in Burke County from the McDowell County line to the
Catawba County line will be repaved by Maymead Inc. of Mountain City Tenn., for
$36 million. The work may begin March 5 and finish by July of 2020.
These are three of 16 road and bridge projects recently awarded by
the NCDOT. Per state law, they went to the lowest qualified bidder for each
project. The contracts are worth $138.6 million, $1.8 million less than engineer
estimates.
