Roxboro - There is a new memorial
highway in the N.C. Department of Transportation’s road system. At a ceremony in
Roxboro this afternoon, the section of N.C. 57 between Thomas Road and the
intersection of Concord Church Road and Concord Ceffo Road was named the First
Lieutenant Guy J. Winstead Highway, in honor of a decorated World War I soldier
from Person County.
Lt. Winstead was a member of the American Expeditionary Forces, and
was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his heroism during
June and July 1918 in France. He was credited with leading four patrols across a
river while exposed to heavy enemy machine-gun fire, with his patrol boat sunk
on one of the trips. While under fire and within enemy lines he and five other
soldiers successfully raided a German outpost. Tragically, on July 15, 1918 he
was killed by enemy fire.
Today’s ceremony honoring Lt. Winstead was attended by several
family members, with NCDOT Chief Engineer Tim Little delivering the keynote
speech.
