Culvert Installation Requires Closure of N.C. 53 West of Jacksonville

Closure to last three months

Jacksonville - A portion of N.C. 53, near Pony Farm Road in Onslow County will be closed to traffic beginning Monday, April 23, so a N.C. Department of Transportation contractor can install a drainage culvert.

The closure will last until late July. Traffic will be detoured to Justice Road, Gould Road and back to N.C. 53.

“The contractor will be working around the clock to install this culvert within the allotted 90-day time frame,” said Jacksonville Resident Engineer Trevor Carroll. “We ask drivers to please use caution since our crews will be monitoring and maintaining the detour.”

The culvert installation is part of a widening project on N.C. 53 that will add a center turn lane from Justice Road to Fit Lockamy Road. The project is expected to be open for traffic by the end of July.

“A center turn lane will significantly improve the safety of this stretch of road,” said Carroll.
