SYLVA — A Clay County road will go under construction, starting
Monday, March 26, necessitating periodic closures into the summer.
Maintenance crews from the N.C. Department of Transportation will
replace 16 drainage pipes at multiple locations along a 4.5-mile stretch of
Downings Creek Road northeast of Hayesville.
Rather than close the entire road, employees will conduct the work
in small phases that requiring only one short section of the road to be closed
at a time. The exact locations of the closures will shift as the pipes are
replaced.
To minimize traffic disruptions, the road closures will be limited
to weekdays between 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The pipe replacement project is expected to end by July. Then later
this fall, a contractor will re-pave the entire stretch, making it smooth again
for motorists.
Transportation officials remind motorists to obey all posted signs
and slow down in work zones, even when workers are not present.
