Upcoming Northbound Durham Freeway Closure

DURHAM – Work that is part of the East End Connector project will require a short nightly closure of northbound Durham Freeway this weekend.

On Friday, Nov. 30, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., the freeway will be closed between Ellis Road (Exit 8) and Alston Avenue (Exit 11).

To detour around the worksite, motorists may use Ellis Road, NE Creek Parkway, Cornwallis Road and Alston Avenue to re-access the Durham Freeway.

The work and closure schedule are subject to change should poor weather interfere.

The East End Connector is a 3.9-mile divided highway that will connect the Durham Freeway to U.S. 70, which is being upgraded to interstate standards between Pleasant Drive and N.C. 98. It will enable drivers to travel non-stop between Interstate 85 in Durham, the freeway, I-40 and U.S. 1 in Cary.

The new highway, expected to be designated Interstate 885, is projected to open in late 2019.
