  • What is the purpose of the Transportation Engineering Associates Program?

    Since its inception more than 50 years ago, the Transportation Engineering Associates Program has centered on developing competitive leaders with the skills, training and experience necessary to perform in a variety of areas rather than focusing on one specific function.

    The program has three major goals:

    • Orient the newly graduated engineer to the N.C. Department of Transportation’s major organizational functions of the various highway units, branches and divisions

    • Provide a career development plan and training program that gives associates a broad background and practical application of highway engineering

    • Build a talent pipeline of professionally trained and experienced engineers who can assume management responsibilities with confidence

  • Does my TEA Program experience count toward my Professional Engineer license?
    ​Yes. The time you spend in the program will count toward your Professional Engineer (P.E.) license.
  • Can I select assignments on my TEA Program rotation?
    ​Yes. You will have a multitude of assignments during your 18-month rotation. Two are currently mandatory: construction and maintenance and operations. The others are chosen by you.
  • Will the positions be based in Raleigh only?
    No. Positions can be based in Raleigh or division offices across North Carolina, although some time is required in Raleigh. The specific locations will be shared once a candidate has received an offer.
  • Am I considered a permanent or temporary employee?
    You are considered a full-time, permanent employee with benefits from the time you are placed on the payroll. The probationary period is 12 months from your actual date of employment. For more employee information, visit the State Employee Resources​ website.
  • Why do you have a limit on the number of years post-graduate?
    The program provides opportunities for newly graduated candidates and inspires fresh perspectives to help NCDOT achieve its mission. NCDOT will not be able to consider applicants who have been graduated for more than two years.
  • What type of applicants are you looking for?

    NCDOT is looking for individuals who:

    • Demonstrate flexible thinking and a desire to learn and adapt

    • Like to solve issues and collaborate across the organization, utilizing excellent quantitative and engineering analytical skills to deliver results

    • Have effective writing and presentation skills

    • Demonstrate an ability to get things done

  • I applied in the last round. Do I have to reapply now?
    Yes. There are two recruiting windows each year. If you were not successful in your initial application, you will need to apply again if you still meet the eligibility criteria.
  • How many associates are accepted into the program?
    ​NCDOT aims to accept 30 associates each recruiting window.​
