HBCU/MSI Internship

The Office of Historically Black Colleges and Universities Outreach Internship Program at the N.C. Department of Transportation provides real-world, hands-on experience for students attending HBCU and minority serving institutions in North Carolina.

The 10-week summer internship program is an ideal way for graduate and undergraduate students to gain valuable work experience at NCDOT and learn what a career in the transportation industry can offer.  

Essential components of the internship include professional development workshops on resume building, business writing and networking. Interns also work with NCDOT leaders  and development important career connections. Interns work 40 hours per week as temporary employees and are paid a competitive wage. ​

​​Who Should Apply?​

Internship applicants must have graduated within the past three years from a North Carolina HBCU/MSI undergraduate or graduate degree program at one of North Carolina’s HBCU/MSI or be currently enrolled in a North Carolina HBCU/MSI undergraduate or graduate program.​

Eligibility Requirements

  • ​​Resident of North Carolina
  • Completed at least 24 credit hours at an North Carolina HBCU/MSI
  • Currently enrolled as a full-time student at an North Carolina HBCU/MSI or have graduated from a North Carolina HBCU/MSI within the past three years
  • Legal right to work in the U.S.

Successful applicants have:

  • Innovative ideas for enhancing NCDOT programs and initiatives
  • Exceptional communication and organization skills
  • An interest in working on state government reform efforts
  • The flexibility to work on multiple projects simultaneously​
