The N.C. Department of Transportation’s Division of Aviation Sections and Units promote the economic well-being of North Carolina through development of a safe and robust air transportation system.
State and federal grant programs, airport planning, technical assistance and professional development programs help the state’s 72 public airports build and maintain infrastructure that meets community needs.
Initiatives with partners in business, government, education, and research push the boundaries of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS, or drones) to integrate drone use for business and government use throughout the state .
The Aviation Division collaborates with the N.C. Department of Commerce, Economic Development Partnership, airports and partners across the state to recruit aerospace-related business investment and build the workforce.
State Aircraft Services
Two twin-engine aircraft serve state agencies with aerial photography and spatial information products for transportation projects, transporting government officials on state business and assisting government agencies with statewide emergency response.
