RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.

Fireman Henry Smith Bridge

This week, officials with the North Carolina Department of Transportation and Edenton joined family and friends of the late Benjamin Henry Smith to dedicate in his honor a bridge on N.C. 17 Business over Filberts Creek.

Smith was born in Rocky Mount in 1915 and served as a volunteer firefighter with the Edenton Fire Department. He also served as a state license examiner.

Sadly, Smith was killed in November 1947 in a crash involving the fire truck. Smith had responded to a call and was headed back to the fire station when crash occurred.

NC Quick Pass App

Attention NC Quick Pass customers … there is a new NC Quick Pass app which allows customers to manage their accounts and pay their tolls.

Customers can use the app to order a new transponder, add a vehicle, and even set high occupancy vehicle status to travel free in the I-77 Express Lanes if the HOV requirements are met.

On August 1, the old NC Quick Pass HOV app and HOV website will no longer be available for use.

SPSF New Legislation

On July 27, NCDOT will host a workshop for Small Professional Services Firms to provide them with information about new legislation, upcoming contracts and how small professional services firms can become prequalified and certified.

Last year, legislation was approved that enables NCDOT to increase the advertising and awarding of contracts to these firms and expand the outsourcing of professional services to small businesses.
