NC 12 Recovery Efforts Update - September 2014

In September 2014, NCDOT completed a beach nourishment project along N.C. 12 north of Rodanthe on Hatteras Island in Dare County.

On July 25, 2014, Crews with Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company, LLC of Oak Brook, Ill. began dredging and placing approximately 1.7 million cubic yards of sand to widen the beach in an effort to protect N.C. 12.

The project was administered by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and was designed to provide several years of protection before a long-term project is completed for this stretch of N.C. 12 where storms, including Hurricane Sandy, have resulted in severe beach erosion along the road.

The USACE awarded a $20.3 million contract in late June 2014 to Great Lakes Dredge & Dock for the project. The Federal Highway Administration approved Hurricane Sandy emergency relief funds to pay for this project.
