Bicycle and Pedestrian Planning Grant Initiative - Call OPEN
The 2010 Call for Proposals is now OPEN for the Bicycle and Pedestrian Planning Grant Initiative.  Funding is secured for the 2010 cycle at $400,000. Over the past six years, 92 municipalities have been awarded grants for a total of $2,268,818 allocated.  For more information about the Planning Grant Initiative in general, click here. Share the Road Specialized License Plate

he NCDOT, Division of Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation recognizes the need to educate cyclists and motorists about their rights and responsibilities in sharing roadway space.  In an effort to bring greater awareness to the public a “Share the Road” specialized license plate has been made available. Safe Routes to School Program
The 2nd SRTS Program call for proposals is now CLOSED.  A total of $3.9 million was available through two different funding categories – infrastructure and non-infrastructure.  Seventy-six applications were received for the infrastructure program, and 17 applications were received for the non-infrastructure program. Point Lookout Trail Opens in McDowell County
While much of US 70 in Western North Carolina remained open to vehicular traffic, one section overlooking the Royal Gorge in McDowell County, had been closed to traffic for many year. This abandoned scenic corridor has been reopened to the public as a multi-use trail and promises to attract many visitors.  Click here to read more. (1/22/08)

2009 NC Calendar of Bicycling Events
2009 is here and we are pleased to make available this year's online calendar. Many events are currently listed. It is not too late to add your event so that bicyclists can make their plans early to participate in any of the cycling events held throughout our state. North Carolina has some of the region's best riding because of its climate and varying terrain from the mountains to the coast. This online calendar list annually, more than 200 major bicycling events taking place in communities near to everyone; there are rides and tours for novice and the professional. To see how you can become involved, review the events on the NC Calendar of Bicycling Events and click on the contact information listed.
