The projects in this section have been awarded contracts and are currently under construction. These projects are considered to be active work zones.

Alligator River Bridge (Tyrrell #7) US 64 STIP Number:None: The project will rehab the existing drawbridge on US 64 over the Alligator River in Tyrrell/Dare County.

Bonner Bridge Repairs: NCDOT is currently making repairs to the aging Herbert C. Bonner Bridge over Oregon Inlet in Dare County.

Brawley School Road Widening Project STIP Number:R-3833: The project is necessary to widen Brawley School Road from south of Southfork Road to Talbert Road to improve access, relieve congestion and improve safety.

Charlotte Outer Loop STIP Number:R-2248E, R-2123CE: Two projects to complete the Charlotte Outer Loop and a project to widen I-85 have been combined into one design-build-finance package to accelerate construction.

I-40 and I-77 Interchange Statesville STIP Number:I-3819A: The I-40 and I-77 interchange in Statesville is a critical intersection of North Carolina. Built in the late 1960s, the current configuration has outlived its original purpose.

I-40/I-440 Rebuild Project STIP Number:I-5338, I-5311: The project will replace the pavement on I-40 between west of the Jones Franklin Road overpass and the exit for I-440/U.S. 64, and on I-440 between I-40/U.S. 64 and just north of U.S. 264 (Knightdale Bypass), add extra travel lanes and rehabilitate 14 bridges.

I-85 Corridor Improvement Project STIP Number:I-2304AC, I-2304AD: The I-85 Corridor Improvement Project will complete a comprehensive overhaul of a critical stretch of I-85 in North Carolina’s Triad Region, including replacement of the narrow and outdated Yadkin River Bridge.

NC 73 Widening Project STIP Number:R-2632AA: This project is necessary to widen N.C. 73 from two lanes to four lanes with center turn lanes from west if U.S. 21 to east of N.C. 115. Also, a quadrant left will be placed at the intersection of N.C. 73 and N.C. 21.

NC 86/South Columbia Street Widening STIP Number:U-0624: This multi-modal project will widen and enhance a section of N.C. 86/South Columbia Street in Chapel Hill from Purefoy Road to Manning Drive.

North Carolina Bridge Information STIP Number:None: The N.C. Department of Transportation currently maintains 12,712 bridges across North Carolina, ranking our state as 13th in the nation for the highest number of state-maintained bridges.

Smithfield Neuse River Bridge Replacement STIP Number:B-3864: The North Carolina Department of Transportation is replacing the bridge on U.S. 70 Business in downtown Smithfield over the Neuse River.

Triangle Expressway STIP Number:R-2635, U-4763B: Construction has begun on North Carolina’s first modern toll road, the Triangle Expressway in Wake and Durham counties.

Union Cross Road Widening Project STIP Number:U-4909: The project will widen 4.2 miles of Union Cross Road in Winston-Salem and Kernersville from Sedge Garden Road north of I-40 to just south of U.S. 311.

US 321 Improvements STIP Number:R-2237C: The improvement of US 321 from SR 1500 (Blackberry Road) north to US 221 in Blowing Rock, which includes both widening and bypass alternatives.

US 52 Bridge Replacement Project STIP Number:U-2826A: The project will replace the U.S. 52 North and South bridges over Liberty Street and the Norfolk Southern Railroad Switching Yard in Winston-Salem. Crews will also widen Liberty Street, make ramp improvements to the U.S. 52 interchange with 25th and 28th streets and install new traffic signals.

US 52 Improvement Project STIP Number:U-2826B: The project will streamline and repave one-half mile of U.S. 52 from U.S. 421/Business 40 to Akron Drive, and improve part of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Winston-Salem.

US 74 Widening/Improvements STIP Number:U-209B: The purpose of the proposed project is to enhance mobility and improve traffic flow and safety in the Independence Boulevard corridor in east Charlotte.

Wrightsville Beach Bridge: NCDOT is rehabilitating the bridge on U.S. 76/74 as you travel into Wrightsville Beach.

Projects In Development

About Projects In Development
Planning and/or design is underway for these projects. They are generally less than 10 years from right-of-way acquisition or construction. Planning includes examining multiple alternatives and analyzing environmental effects.

Not every project in development will receive funding for right of way or construction. However, planning studies indicate NCDOT is seriously considering implementing the project.

401 Corridor Study STIP Number:R-2609: The purpose of the US 401 Corridor Study is to identify deficiencies in the existing corridor and develop alternatives for accommodating future growth in traffic volumes.

Bonner Bridge Replacement STIP Number:B-2500: The Bonner Bridge Replacement Project will replace the existing bridge over Oregon Inlet in Dare County and provide for the long-term retention of N.C. 12 between Oregon Inlet and Rodanthe.

Business 40 STIP Number:U-2827B: The North Carolina Department of Transportation is beginning the project development studies for Business 40 (also known as I-40 Business) from west of 4th Street to east of Church Street in Winston-Salem.

Cape Fear Skyway STIP Number:U-4738: New location roadway south of Wilmington, including a bridge over the Cape Fear River, from US 17 Bypass to US 421.

Capital Blvd., Peace St./Wade Ave. Bridge Replacements STIP Number:B-5121, B-5317: Replace the existing bridges on Capital Boulevard (US 70/US 401) over Peace Street and on Capital Boulevard at Wade Avenue in Raleigh.

East End Connector STIP Number:U-0071: The East End Connector will provide a direct connection between the Durham Freeway (NC 147) and US 70 (Miami Boulevard)

Fire Tower Road Proposed Extension STIP Number:U-5006: The North Carolina Department of Transportation proposes to extend Fire Tower Road (S.R. 1708) from the proposed Greenville Southwest Bypass to Memorial Drive (N.C. 11/903) in Pitt County, NC near the City of Greenville and the Town of Winterville.

Garden Parkway STIP Number:U-3321: The North Carolina Turnpike Authority (NCTA) and the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) propose to improve east-west travel between I-85 west of Gastonia in Gaston County and I-485/NC 160 in Mecklenburg County and improve connectivity between southern Gaston County and Mecklenburg County.

Greensboro Urban Loop STIP Number:U-2524, U-2525: The Greensboro Urban Loop which is the proposed I-785/I-840 will help improve congestion on existing I-40, particularly in the area where I-40, I-85 Business and U.S. Routes 29, 70, 220 and 421 all run concurrently.

Greenville Southwest Bypass Study STIP Number:R-2250: NCDOT is preparing an engineering and environmental study to ease existing and anticipated traffic congestion on NC 11 (Memorial Drive) and Stantonsburg Road (SR 1467 and US 264 Business) through portions of Pitt County, Greenville.

I-26 Connector, Asheville, NC STIP Number:I-2513: An interstate highway to connect I-26 from the I-26/I-40/I-240 interchange southwest of Asheville to US 19-23-70 north of Asheville.

I-40 Widening - Southeast Raleigh to Clayton Project STIP Number:I-5111: The I-40 Widening - Southeast Raleigh to Clayton Project will focus on improving I-40 from the beltline in Raleigh, to NC 42 in Johnston County, by adding additional travel lanes to ease congestion throughout this section of I-40.

I-440 Improvements STIP Number:U-2719: This project will widen I-440 East and West between north of Wade Avenue and south of Walnut Street.

I-77 Improvements (I-277 / NC 16 (Brookshire Freeway) to I-85 in Charlotte) STIP Number:I-3311E: This project is to improve I-77 from I-277 / NC 16 (Brookshire Freeway) to I-85 in Charlotte. This will include widening the existing travel lanes and shoulders on the southbound lanes, but will not add additional lanes to I-77.

Independence Boulevard Extension STIP Number:U-4434: Extension of SR 1209 (Independence Boulevard) from Randall Parkway to US 74 (Martin Luther King, Jr. Parkway)

Kinston Bypass Project STIP Number:R-2553: The Kinston Bypass Project is approximately 12 miles in length from US 70 near LaGrange, in Lenoir County, to US 70 near Dover, in Craven County.

Long-Term Solutions for N.C. 12 Breaches STIP Number:B-2500 A,B: NCDOT is working to provide long-term solutions for the two breaches caused by Hurricane Irene in August 2011 along N.C. 12 on the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge and in Rodanthe.

Macy Grove Road Improvements Project STIP Number:U-2800, U-4734: The Macy Grove Road improvements and extension will provide additional traffic carrying capacity between I-40 Business and areas north of Kernersville.

Mid-Currituck Bridge Project STIP Number:R-2576: The North Carolina Turnpike Authority (NCTA) proposes to build a toll bridge across Currituck Sound that would connect the mainland with the Outer Banks in Currituck County.

Monroe Connector/Bypass STIP Number:R-3329, R-2559: New location roadway from US 74 at I-485 in eastern Mecklenburg County to US 74 near the Town of Marshville in Union County.

NC 105 Widening Project STIP Number:R-2566: The N.C. Department of Transportation proposes to widen a 14.6 mile section of N.C. 105 from two lanes to four lanes with a raised grass median from U.S. 221 in Linville to N.C. 105 Bypass (State Road 1107) in Boone. N.C.

NC 107 Connector STIP Number:R-4745: Study of constructing a new road from N.C. 107 to U.S. 23-74 east of Sylvia in Jackson County.

NC 109 Improvements STIP Number:R-2568C: Improvements to NC 109 from Old Greensboro Road (SR 1798) in Davidson County to I-40/US 311 in Forsyth County.

NC 119 Relocation Project STIP Number:U-3109: NCDOT proposes to relocate NC 119 in Mebane from I-85 to existing NC 119 near Mrs. White Lane (SR 1918) in Alamance County.

NC 12 Improvements South of Rodanthe STIP Number:R-4070 B; R-3116 A, B: NCDOT is working on proposed improvements to several sections of N.C. 12 on Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands in the Outer Banks.

NC 143 Improvement Project STIP Number:R-2822B: The N.C. Department of Transportation wants to improve safety on N.C. 143 west of Robbinsville from West Buffalo Creek to N.C. 143 Business. N.C. 143 is a windy, two-lane road through the mountains that serves as the primary east-west corridor for Graham County.

NC 211 Road Widening Project STIP Number:R-2812: The project includes widening to a multi-lane highway with curbs and gutters, and sidewalks, as well as installing signals and signs.

NC 68 Improvements STIP Number:W-5114: The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is proposing to improve NC 68 from south of SR 2111 (East Harrell Road) to SR 4831 (Bartonshire Drive) in Guilford County. This project is approximately 0.4 mile in length. Project W-5114 is included in NCDOT 2011-2020 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP).

Proposed Improvements to US 70/Gallants Channel Bridge STIP Number:R-3307: NCDOT is proposing to replace the existing bascule bridge with a 65-foot fixed span bridge and widen US Highway 70 to 4-lanes with a median on new location.

Railroad Improvements STIP Number:None: The NCDOT is working with the freight railroads and investing state and federal funds on railroad track and signal improvements that will reduce travel time, increase capacity and improve reliability for both freight and passenger rail service along the North Carolina Railroad corridor.

Salem Creek Connector STIP Number:U-2925: NCDOT will construct a new 1.1-mile, four-lane road with a median from Martin Luther King Jr. Drive south of Winston-Salem State University to Rams Drive (formerly Stadium Drive) at the Wake Forest Innovation Quarter.

Southeast High-Speed Rail STIP Number:None: In 1992, the U.S. Department of Transportation designated five national high-speed rail corridors across the country. The original Southeast High Speed Rail Corridor - extending from Washington, D.C. through Richmond and Raleigh to Charlotte.

Topsail Island Bridge Replacement STIP Number:B-4929: Build new bridge to replace the existing swing bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway on NC 50 / 210 in Surf City.

Triangle Expressway Southeast Extension STIP Number:R-2721, R-2828, R-2829: Planning studies for the Southeast Extension in Wake and Johnston counties are underway. The Southeast Extension will extend the Triangle Expressway and complete the Raleigh Outer Loop.

US 13 /US 158 Widening Project STIP Number:R-2507A: In Hertford and Gates Counties, the Design-Build Project R-2507A widens U.S. 13 / U.S. 158 from U.S. 158 / N.C. 45 near Winton to the US 158 Bypass in Tarheel.

US 158 Reidsville Road Project STIP Number:R-2577: The purpose of the proposed project is to improve the traffic carrying capacity and safety along US 158, within the project limits.

US 158 Widening Project STIP Number:R-2582, R-2584: The primary purpose of the proposed project is to improve traffic flow, increase safety, and to improve access to existing and potential future industry along the US 158 Corridor in Northampton County.

US 17 Business/NC 37 Improvements Project STIP Number:R-4467: The purpose of this project is to continue to provide a direct, reliable route between downtown Hertford and the town of Winfall. The current route is experiencing significant deterioration and ongoing maintenance problems, jeopardizing its ability to provide reliable direct connectivity.

US 17 Hampstead Bypass STIP Number:U-4751, R-3300: The purpose of the project is to improve the traffic carrying capacity and safety of the US 17 and Market Street corridor in the project area.

US 64 Asheboro Bypass STIP Number:R-2536: The US 64 southern bypass of the Town of Asheboro with a connector to the North Carolina Zoological Park. The bypass begins between Stutts Road and Phillips Country Trail west of Asheboro and ends near Trogden Hill Road east of Asheboro.

US 64 Improvements STIP Number:R-2544, R-2545: The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has reinitiated a project study to evaluate widening of the 27.3-mile segment of US 64 from Columbia (in Tyrrell County) to US 264 (in Dare County near Manns Harbor).

US 74 Relocation Project STIP Number:A-9BC: The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) proposes to relocate US 74 from Robbinsville to Stecoah in Graham County.

Winston Salem Northern Beltway STIP Number:U-2579, R-2247: The entire Winston-Salem Northern Beltway, from US 158 southwest of the City to US 311 southeast of the City. Includes Western Section, Eastern Section, and Eastern Section Extension.

Long-Range Studies

About Long-Range Studies
These are advanced planning studies that guide NCDOT's decision-making process and future improvements along a corridor or section of roadway. Projects resulting from these studies are generally at least 10 years or more from construction.
Long-range studies can help NCDOT determine which projects should be funded in the future. Even if a project has been the subject of a long-range study, planning studies must still be done before the project can be implemented.

Carolina Bays Parkway Extension Feasibility Study STIP Number:None: The Carolina Bays Parkway extension project involves the development of a new multilane full control of access highway facility. In South Carolina this facility will extend the CBP from SC 9 northerly approximately five miles to a logical terminus at the South Carolina / North Carolina State line.

High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) STIP Number:None: The central concept for HOV lanes is to move more people rather than more cars. When traffic is congested, HOV lanes can carry more people than a general-purpose lane of traffic. Even when HOV lanes look less congested than general-purpose lanes, they often carry more people.

I-74 Feasibility Study STIP Number:None: The I-74 corridor, as supported by the Governor of North Carolina, has been identified as a Strategic Highway Corridor (SHC) in the Statewide Transportation Plan adopted by the Board of Transportation on September 2, 2004.

I-95 Corridor Planning and Finance Study STIP Number:None: The NCDOT is working to determine how best to renew I-95 through our state. The I-95 Corridor Planning and Finance Study will provide the ideal approach for improved safety, connectivity and efficiency along this highway.

Moore County Transportation Plan STIP Number:None: Moore County has the unique opportunity to plan its transportation future. Through a series of public workshops called charrettes, residents will work together to create a vision for the county's transportation needs.

NC 73 Transportation/Land Use Study STIP Number:None: The NC 73 Corridor is one of two east-west highways serving the rapidly growing area around Lake Norman, in the North Carolina Piedmont.

NC54-I40 Corridor Study STIP Number:None: The NC 54 corridor is a gateway for this region, with both local and regional importance. The NC 54-I40 interchange has consistently ranked as the top congested location in the region.

Northern Durham Parkway STIP Number:None: The Northern Durham Parkway was developed by the Durham Joint City-County Planning Commission in response to local citizen concerns with the proposed Durham Northwest-Northeast Loop.

US 1 Corridor Study STIP Number:None: The corridor study area is in the Triangle metropolitan area of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill and is an important corridor in the north-south movement of people and goods in the region.

US 15-501 Corridor Improvements STIP Number:None: NCDOT is preparing an environmental study to ease traffic congestion and improve safety on US 15-501 from just south of Pittsboro continuing in a northerly direction to the US 64 Bypass in Chatham County.

US 17 Corridor Study Report STIP Number:None: Local and regional interest in protecting the integrity and maintaining the mobility of US 17 (Ocean Highway) in conjunction with ever increasing residential and commercial development in Brunswick County dictated the necessity of undertaking a detailed corridor study. US 64-NC 49 Corridor Study - Phase I STIP Number:None: The North Carolina Department of Transportation has initiated a comprehensive study to develop a plan for the future of US 64 and NC 49 from Charlotte and Statesville to Raleigh.

US 64-NC 49 Corridor Study - Phase IIA STIP Number:None: A study of a section of US 64 between Pittsboro and Cary in Chatham and Wake counties is currently underway. The 19 mile section extends from the US 64 US and 64-Business split in Pittsboro to the US 1 and US 64 interchange in Cary.

US 70 Corridor STIP Number:None: The North Carolina Department of Transportation is currently undertaking multiple activities to improve passenger and freight movement along the US 70 Corridor from Raleigh to the State Port at Morehead City.
