Project Overview
This project will widen eight miles of I-95 to a total of eight lanes in Lumberton between mile marker 13 (I-74) and just north of mile marker 21. The project also will upgrade three interchanges (exits 17, 19 and 20) with new bridges and ramps to modern design standards and replace four other bridges.
In late 2019, the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded the N.C. Department of Transportation
a $22.5 million grant through its Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) program toward the widening of I-95.
This is one of several
long-term projects that would upgrade or widen I-95 in North Carolina.
Project Funding
The widening of this part of I-95 was awarded in 2021 as a design-build contract. The design-build process allows NCDOT to hire a team of designers and contractors responsible for the final design, right-of-way acquisition and construction of the project. The team can begin construction on one portion of the project while it finishes the design and right-of-way acquisition for other portions. This process helps identify innovative solutions, reduce property impacts and deliver the project more quickly.
