SPYWARE

What is it: one of several types of malicious software, spyware refers to programs tha Internet companies install on your computer to collect information about your surfing habits. Basically, spyware performs guerrilla market research, which is then sold to companies looking to target a specific audience. These programs are sophisticated and invasive; they can replace the ad embedded in a Web page with one designed to appeal to a specific user (such as you) or pop up additional ads based on the sites a user visits (hence, its other name: adware). In other words, Big Brother is surfing, and he has something he would like to sell you.

Why it's a drag: Apart from invading your privacy, spyware hogs memory and slows down your surfing because it creates a link between your computer and the spying company's server. These servers then siphon information and deliver files. Spyware companies don't care if the programs work efficiently, just that they do their job.

The fix: The best anti-spyware program is a free download. Ad-Aware SE locates and disables spyware with a few mouse clicks. Ad-Aware displays the spyware it detects on your computer and allows you to decide to Quarantine it or remove it completely.
