Beginning in 2007, the Pavement Management Unit began trying to stay synchronized with the road network as maintained by the GIS Unit. This means that if GIS has not added a route, renumbered a route or deleted a route, we have avoided making changes in our data. In the long term, this is a very good thing as we will begin receiving automatic updates and changes from them.
In the short term, the result of this is a discrepancy sometimes existing between the Pavement Condition Survey location information and the "ground truth" so to speak. This most often occurs due to bypass construction or rerouting of multiple sections (sometimes as a result of bypass construction).
A good example of this could be US 1 in Lee County. The bypass has been finished for some time and the old sections of US 1 are now US 1B or SR routes. Unfortunately due to various delays, GIS has not entered the information for the project completely into their system. This means that Pavement Condition Survey data for these sections is problematic. Another common issue is missing SR petitions from subdivision roads.
We are encouraging GIS to catch up on their backlog as quickly as possible and I think that due to new systems, in future years there will be much better turnaround on new roads and rerouting requests. In the meantime, Pavement Management had to come up with an interim solution, so we came up with a new route number: 6.
If you are missing data or the data on a road is not making sense (for instance, US 1 above), take a look at the bottom of a spreadsheet and you will find a few routes that start with the number 6.
In the Lee county example, the NEW US 1 is entered as 60000001 (NB) and 60400001 (SB). The data on the old US 1 (now US 1B) is still stored on 40000001 and 40400001. Any missing subdivision or SR routes are also likely 6 routes (60004345 etc).
We apologize for any confusion or inconvenience and are working diligently with GIS to minimize the issue in the future.
