Using the Division of Motor Vehicle's Online Driving Record Request tool, North Carolina citizens can purchase a copy of their official driving record – a true representation of the driver's history as it appears in the official DMV records.

The driving record contains pertinent information about the license holder, including:

  • Name, address and driver license number
  • Driver license status (i.e., valid, expired, suspended, etc.)
  • Expiration date
  • Convictions
  • Driver control actions (i.e., failure to yield, failure to give right-of-way, etc.)
  • Traffic wrecks

Note: The information on a driving record is subject to change due to convictions, license suspensions, revocations or cancellations. Pending charges do not appear on a record.

Two types of records are available:

  • Certified records, which cost $11 and are primarily for official use by government agencies as well as federal, state and local courts
  • Non-certified records, which cost $8 and are provided for general purposes, such as for use by insurance companies and prospective employers or for a driver’s personal records

To order online, the license holder and the requestor (if different) must have a valid North Carolina driver license or ID card. Any entity may request the driving record of an individual for a valid reason under the Driver Privacy Protection Act.

For each request, the following information about the license holder is needed:

  • First and Last Name
  • Date of birth
  • North Carolina driver license or ID card number
  • Social Security number, Individual Taxpayer Identification number or U.S. Visa number

Online driver record requests are not available to drivers whose license was issued before January 2000. Please visit a licensing agency or send your request by postal mail.
