The N.C. Department of Transportation's Office of Education Initiatives works to advance a wide range of programs and activities that focus heavily on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) – beginning in kindergarten and all the way to graduate school – to develop a talented workforce to help meet North Carolina’s future transportation demands.

Three major initiatives – School to Career Pathways Initiative, the NCDOT Internship Network and DoT Volunteers – help the Office of Education Initiatives attract and recruit the best talent by:

  • Making programming available in both rural to urban communities
  • Encouraging broad participation, including women and minorities, in engineering fields
  • Increasing NCDOT mentorship throughout K-12 schools
  • Providing multidisciplinary internship and training opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students

Areas of focus include:

  • Capturing student interest in STEM fields through creative, out of the box experiences
  • Providing support to K-12, college and post-graduate students from rural to urban communities
  • Enhancing and building relationships with K-12 schools and colleges/universities
  • Developing annual targets that create long lasting programs promoting STEM careers within the transportation industry
