Richard Walls of Raleigh oversees the department’s Aviation, Bicycle and Pedestrian, Rail, Public Transportation and Ferry divisions. He had served previously as Director of Aviation, a position he held from June 29, 2009.
Walls joined NCDOT with more than 20 years of private sector experience in airport design and development (commercial, general aviation and military). He is also the founder of Raleigh-based Walls Engineering, PLLC, and is an active member of the North Carolina Airports Association.
Walls received an electrical engineering degree from the University of Central Florida and is a registered professional engineer in North Carolina and more than a dozen other states. His project experience includes work at Atlanta-Hartsfield Jackson International, Denver International, Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental, and the Duplin County and Sampson County airports in North Carolina.
Walls has also worked on projects at U.S. Air Force bases in Dover, Del. and Grand Forks, N.D.
